Dr. Md Istiak Hossain is currently serving as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology at North South University, effective July 1, 2024. Prior to this appointment, he worked as a Research Scientist in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Tulane University, USA. His research at Tulane focused on developing chemical-based strategies to mitigate harmful algal blooms (Red Tide) in the Gulf of Mexico, specifically targeting Karenia brevis, a marine dinoflagellate, while minimizing impact on non-target species. In addition, Dr. Hossain contributed to projects involving the synthesis of polypeptoids—structural analogs of polypeptides—for applications in drug delivery and membrane protein solubilization.
Dr. Hossain earned his Ph.D. in the field of transition metal catalysis from the University of Toledo, USA, in 2020. His doctoral research focused on improving existing homogeneous catalytic systems for hydrosilylation—a key catalytic process in the large-scale production of silicone rubbers. His research findings have been published in several reputable peer-reviewed scientific journals.
Alongside his academic experience, Dr. Hossain also worked with the Research and Development team at Incepta Chemicals Ltd., gaining valuable industry experience.
